Product Alliance

Hi, I recently took a course from Product Alliance and I thought of sharing my experience about the course in this article. If you are someone like me, who is trying to break into Product management and got confused by so many interview preparation courses, then this article might help you.

Swipe to Unlock: The Primer on Technology and Business Strategy

I got introduced to the Product Alliance course through the book called Swipe to Unlockauthored by 3 Product Managers at Google, Facebook, and Microsoft: Neel Mehta, Aditya Agashe, and Parth Detroja who is also the authors of Product Alliance as well. This particular book is recommended by so many product managers and fellow aspirants on LinkedIn. Driven by curiosity, I started reading the book. Although I don’t read books religiously, this book hooked me up with its simple explanation and relatable analogies of must known technological concepts and business strategies. So, impressed by their quality content, I explored Product Alliance and took their 3 course bundle.

The courses are divided into Breaking into Product management, Hacking the product interview and Specific company deep dives.

Breaking into Product Management

This course gives us an idea how to build product experience as they take us on a journey of top companies product managers who came from diverse backgrounds. The most important part of this course they guide on how recruiting works for PM roles and helps us craft a perfect resume along with getting a successful referral.

Hacking the PM interview

This course gives us an understanding on how to answer different types of PM interview questions which includes Execution, Product, Strategy and behavioural and technical questions. They also provide some of the interview strategies which worked for them. I really liked this particular course as they have included only important contents and also shows exactly what to whiteboard, how to frame answers strategically.

Specific company deep dives

By far, this course is the one that impressed me the most as it gives a specific edge and will save a ton of time in the preparation process. Imagine you have been provided with all the information about the company’s values and mission, competitive facts, financials, new project/ product roadmap and most importantly about the interview process and frequently asked questions related to the company that you’re gonna interview in the next week. That’s what this course does. Also they have included some of the informational interviews with top companies product managers explaining about their interview experience, the projects they are working on and culture of the companies. Take a look at their Pinterest sample.

Overall on the Pros side,

  • Valuable content with life long validity with good quality of video and audio
  • Frequent updating of courses. I purchased this course in the last week of December 2020, within 2 months all the three courses have been updated at least once.
  • 3 course bundle really covers all the aspects required for PM interview preparation.

On the Cons, pricing is expensive when compared to other courses like Exponent. But given the value proposition, the course is priced at a fair price. I completely recommend this course.

This course and the book has helped me change my thought process and mindset completely. As I understood how to empathise better and how users can use/look about the product in a completely different way which we won’t even think of. Being a Full stack Developer, I could see my approach towards product development completely shifted giving more priority to business use cases (demystifying how users use this particular functionality) rather focusing from a technical standpoint. Also this course has accelerated my interview preparation/ readiness for the interview.

Some major things which I learnt through this course while answering Product questions.

  • Learn to empathise better. If you are building something new for a specific group, make sure they don’t feel alienated from the rest of the group.
  • If you feel, you couldn’t answer a question due to any constraint, explain your thought process why you feel so and explain some other alternatives. (Ex. For some metrics question, you couldn’t able to measure metrics due to its feasibility, high cost but explaining why will help you ace the interview)
  • Initially don’t narrow your responses for the questions asked. Explore all the possibilities and choose the best one.
